The Blue Ridge Parkway begins in Cherokee, just North of downtown on US 441, and winds its way through North Carolina and Virginia. For a short drive you can exit at Soco Gap (US 19 just East of Cherokee), or Highway 74 near Waynesville. There are stunning, long range vistas with plenty of places to pull over for photos and to enjoy the view. The best plan for exploring the Parkway is to have no plan at all there are trails, picnic areas, scenic views, creeks and campgrounds around every corner and plenty of room for everyone to find their own secluded spot. For cyclists up for a challenge, the Parkway offers some of the most scenic routes in the East and plays host to several long-distance cycling events, including the Assault on Mount Mitchell and the Bridge to Bridge Century.
